Following the completion of the transport and assembly tasks for the steel sections of the structures, Sarens completes its key contribution to a major traffic project, with all three flyovers scheduled to open by the end of this year.
Sarens' lifting and logistics operations support its client Razel-BEC in mitigating congestion on this main artery in Abidjan, which carries nearly 110,000 vehicles daily.
Sarens, world leader in heavy lifting, engineered transport and crane rental services, has successfully completed logistics engineering and structural assembly scope for the construction project of three new interchanges on Boulevard Germain Koffi Gadeau in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. In close collaboration with its client Razel-BEC, Sarens supported this major infrastructure project -co-financed by the Ivorian State and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) with an investment exceeding 75 billion CFA francs- which is now entering its final stretch prior to the opening of the three flyovers by the end of this year.
Executed by the Road Management Agency (AGEROUTE) as the delegated state body, with Razel-BEC as contractor, the development project provides a strategic solution to relieve congestion on Boulevard Germain Koffi Gadeau. This vital artery in Abidjan handles a daily traffic volume of between 70,000 and 110,000 vehicles, causing severe tailbacks at the Police Academy, Riviera 3, and Riviera Palmeraie junctions due to the inability of traffic lights to manage peak-hour and weekend traffic, which in turn leads to a negative impact on local air quality due to polluting emissions.
Working on behalf of its client Razel-BEC, Sarens was entrusted with transporting and installing the 50 steel box girder sections that make up the three flyovers. The installed components ranged from 19 metres in length and 30 tons in weight to large sections measuring 30 metres and weighing 65 tons. To ensure minimal disruption to urban traffic and maintain safety in the surrounding area, operations were mainly carried out during overnight road closures (between 10:00 pm and 5:00 am), deploying a 300-ton Grove GMK6300L high-capacity crane.
The completion of Sarens’ lifting and assembly operations marks the end of the most complex heavy assembly tasks before the overall commissioning of the three flyovers at the end of this year. The infrastructure will not only ease congestion in the Abidjan metropolitan area, but is also integrated into the future Abidjan-Lagos international corridor, designed to link five West African countries by road (Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria). Furthermore, the project has contributed to local socio-economic development, creating more than 600 jobs for young people over the course of the works.
According to Médéric Lapeyre, Country Manager of Sarens in Ivory Coast: We are very proud to have contributed our international expertise to a project of this scale alongside Razel-BEC, which will transform mobility in the region. Our commitment to West Africa has been absolute since our arrival in 2014, and we will continue to foster local talent and employment. We thank Razel-BEC for their trust in Sarens to successfully carry out the installation of this strategic infrastructure.”
The Boulevard Germain Koffi Gadeau project adds to Sarens' impressive track record in the Ivorian capital, where it previously participated in the construction of the 1.5 km-long bridge connecting the city to its airport. On that occasion, the Sarens team transported and installed 30 spans made up of 1,000-ton pre-stressed concrete beams using high-capacity bogie systems (600 t) and modular barges for water transport.
Coinciding with the progress of this project, Sarens West Africa has significantly reinforced its fleet in Ivory Coast. Building on the initial deployment of the 300-ton crane, the company has added 80-ton and 150-ton units, completing an operational crane portfolio ranging from 80 to 300 ton (including 120-ton and 200-ton models).
Additionally, comprehensive material handling services have been implemented, including forklifts, manlifts, and other auxiliary equipment. With this operational footprint, Sarens strengthens its technical support for key sectors in the region, such as mining, oil & gas, and major public infrastructure projects.
