Comprising four phases, this wind farm will have a total capacity of 2.4 GW when fully commissioned. It is estimated that once all four phases are commissioned it will be possible to reduce up to 3.5 million tons of CO2 per year, with a cumulative impact of 87-90 million tons over its lifetime.
Sarens is currently collaborating on this project, deploying its SGC-90 electric crane, as well as other heavy machinery including cranes such as the CC6800, LR1750 and CC2800-1, to PTSC Yard in Vung Tau, Vietnam.
The new Greater Changhua offshore wind farm, currently under construction between 35 and 60 km off the coast of Changhua country in Taiwan, will have a major impact on the country's efforts to transition to renewable energy, and will contribute to doubling the country’s offshore wind capacity. It is estimated that the two phases that are already producing energy, with a capacity of 900MW, are already supplying power to more than one million homes in the area, which will increase to 2.8 million homes when its four phases come on line during 2026.
Sarens, world leader in heavy lifting, engineered transport and crane rental services, has been actively participating in the development of this project since December 2023. The company has deployed one of its most environmentally friendly cranes, the SGC-90 electric ring crane, to PTSC's yard in Vung Tau, Vietnam, joining other models in the Sarens fleet, including the CC6800, LR1750 and CC2800-1.
The SGC-90, also known as “Little Celeste”, created and developed by Sarens, has been the crane chosen for this project due to its lifting capacity (90,000 ton/meter), the size of its boom and its electric propulsion system. This crane will be responsible, until March 2025, for carrying out lift lower and upper jacket sections for assembly. Over the course of the project, Sarens has been responsible for lifting a total of 33 jackets, with two lifts per jacket.
On this occasion, the Sarens crane was configured with a boom length of 130 meters, and carried out 32 lifts per section, reaching a total of 64 lifts in a single year. Each lower section of the jackets weighs 540 tons, while each of the upper sections weighs 700 tons.
Greater Changhua offshore windfarm will be an important boost to the local economy in Taiwan. It is estimated that during the construction of its four phases, more than 8,300 jobs will be created, of which approximately 1,100 will be direct, and another 7,200 indirect. It will also bring about significant environmental improvements. It is estimated that it will contribute to reducing up to 3.5 million tons of CO2 per year, with a cumulative impact of 87-90 million tons over its useful life.
In recent years, Sarens has become one of the most important strategic allies for the wind power industry in Taiwan, and in the world. The company has also been working in Batam, Indonesia, on the loadout of one of the jacket used at Changhua Offshore Wind Farm, on behalf of PT SMOE Indonesia (Seatrium). On this occasion, Sarens used 144 axles KAMAG SPMT and 8 Powerpack units for the loadout operations and 16x 500ton load cell and 16x 800ton Jacks for the weighing works. The jacket weighted 3850 tons, with a height of 68 meters and 42 meters of length&width.
Sarens has recently worked together with CSBC-DEME Wind Engineering on the marshalling of various foundation components for the turbines of the Hai Long offshore wind farm, being responsible for the marshalling of 52 tree-legged jackets of up to 2,400 tons each and 95 metres high, using a RORO system.
Sarens has also extensive international experience in the assembly and maintenance of wind farms. It has participated in various installations in France such as Fécamp, Saint Nazaire, Provence Grand Large and in the lifting and transport work for the foundation bases of the new offshore wind farm in Saint Brieuc, located off the Brittany coast.
During this project, Sarens successfully transported loads weighing over 1,150 tons. More recently, Sarens has been actively involved in the reception and loading operations of monopiles and transition pieces for 176 turbines for the Coastal Virginia Offshore wind farm and the marshalling and installation of 62 monopiles in the Moray West offshore wind farm, each weighing up to 2000T, the largest and heaviest XXL monopiles ever to be handled in the UK.
