The company has been a major player in the construction of the new Hinkley Point C nuclear power station, using the world's largest terrestrial construction crane, Big Carl, for the installation of the new reactor.
At a time of exponential growth in onshore wind energy on British soil, Sarens has established itself as a specialist not only in the installation of new farms, but also in the preventive and corrective maintenance of existing ones to ensure their contribution to the electricity grid.
Once commissioned, the Hinkley Point C plant will be capable of producing power for more than six million homes, while Sarens' recent maintenance work at the Longpark wind farm will keep renewable electricity production stable for more than 22,000 homes in Scotland.
In a context in which the British energy sector is facing a new paradigm in the search for sources to reduce the environmental footprint of electricity production, Sarens, world leader in heavy lifting, engineered transport and crane rental, has established itself as a strategic ally of the industry, providing its international experience to facilitate the construction and commissioning of some of the most strategically important projects carried out in recent years.
One of the most significant projects is the installation of a new reactor at the Hinkley Point C power station in Somerset. This project, considered strategic by the British government, will enable the generation of energy for more than six million homes in the region, while avoiding the emission of approximately 9 tons of CO2 once it comes into operation in 2030.
This project, the first of this magnitude in the last 20 years on British soil, has required the mobilization of the largest land crane in the world, the SGC-250 created by Sarens, also known as Big Carl. A crane with a load capacity of more than 5,000 tons which, among other tasks, has been responsible for the installation of the 750t "Polar Crane" which will be used in the reactor for refueling and installing equipment, and which at the end of December was responsible for the 245 tons steel dome which closes the roof of the first reactor building and which will allow the installation of the reactor this year. Previously, Sarens' technical team was responsible for the erection and installation of more than 700 heavy parts during the construction process of the plant.
Sarens has also established itself as a strategic partner to the onshore wind sector in the UK at a time of growth that will require sustained industry growth to commission and support the 95 new projects currently in the planning and approval phase. These new projects will require maximum efficiency throughout the construction process, from the loading and transportation of wind turbine components to their unloading at the final location and lifting for final installation. Services in which Sarens has extensive international experience in projects of all types.
Sarens is also a major player in preventive and corrective maintenance. These tasks are vital to maintain the energy generation of each wind turbine stable, and of strategic importance to sustain demand in a growing sector. In this sense, examples such as the maintenance work carried out at Longpark in Stow (Scotland), where Sarens recently carried out the renovation of the turbine drive trains, reaffirm its vocation of service to the British energy sector.
