Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, states such as Florida will receive more than $2.7 billion for the modernization of critical infrastructure, which will provide an important boost to job creation in the sector.
Sarens, a strategic player in the country's construction sector, is increasing its commitment to training in order to supply the industry with highly qualified workers and to retrain and adapt the technology of the most experienced workers.
With the addition of a new crane simulator at its Miami depot, Sarens instructors can effectively guide trainees as they learn to operate the crane and its computer systems, including the Load Moment Indicator (LMI).
Over the last few years, the construction sector in the United States has been confirmed as one of the pillars of the country's economic recovery. In the state of Florida alone, more than $2.7 billion will be invested in the modernization of critical infrastructure thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, including roads, bridges and ports, including more than $777 million to improve water distribution infrastructure, and more than $366 million to replace lead pipes throughout the state.
This investment and the growth in demand for construction services has, in turn, led to an increase in the labor force. Thus, it is estimated that at the beginning of 2024 more than 7.8 million employees across the US were engaged in this sector, of which approximately 622,000 worked in Florida. According to forecasts, more than 280,000 new jobs will be created in the industry nationwide by 2033, representing a 4% growth.
In a context of maximum demand for the sector, Sarens, world leader in heavy lifting, engineered transport and crane rental services and a key player in the US construction sector, has decided to increase its commitment to training as a way of supplying the industry with highly qualified workers who are entering the labor market for the first time and with the permanent professional recycling of those with extensive experience but who require additional training to adapt to the new technologies used in the sector.
As part of this commitment to training, Sarens has incorporated a new Crane Simulator in its Miami depot that offers future crane operators a safe environment in which to obtain the necessary knowledge to prepare for the NCCCO certification testing and OSHA 1400 parameters.
Thanks to this simulator, created by Manitowoc based on a Grove rough terrain crane and manufactured by CM Labs, instructors can effectively guide trainees as they learn to operate the crane and its computer systems, including the Load Moment Indicator (LMI). The simulator realistic crane cab design helps students develop muscle memory and refine control stick techniques. This valuable tool benefits both novice and experienced operators alike.
This simulator is now in full operation at the Sarens facility. Rene Rojos, an operator with more than 15 years of experience and OSHA 30 and NCCCO certification, and Jasiel Puentes, with more than 20 years of experience and NCCCO certification, are two of the first trainees to receive formation on it to improve their professional qualifications as part of their onboarding program at Sarens.
According to Ben King, Sarens Key Account Manager, “using a simulator allows operators to develop an understanding of how a crane feels and reacts to different inputs before transitioning to real cranes. This enables the operator to become more proficient, well prepared, and safe when transitioning to the job site. We can change the scenario, the model crane, weather conditions and lifting parameters to better develop the operator which, in turn, allows them to be exposed to any type of potential scenario they may encounter in real life”.
The incorporation of the crane simulator to Sarens' training offer is part of the company's plan to reinforce its human team and thus offer a more complete and closer service to its customers, which also includes the incorporation of new experienced personnel who also contribute to the training of the youngest in all its facilities.
