The global specialist in heavy lifting, engineered transport and crane rental, lifted and installed the new 250 tons bridge in five hours.
This new walkway will speed up and ease passenger traffic between the train station and its car park above the railway tracks.
The refurbishment and improvement works at Hazebrouck station, in the French region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais, are now completed after the installation of a new walkway above the railway tracks that converge at this point created to speed up passenger traffic between the train station and the car park.
This railway station, located in the centre of the town and inaugurated in September 1848, is considered one of the most important ones in northern France, as it is the junction of the railway lines linking Lille to Fontinettes (Calais) and Arras to Dunkirk.
Sarens, global specialist in heavy lifting, engineered transport and crane rental, was responsible for the lifting and installation of the new bridge, with 75 metres long and approximately 250 tons weight. For this work, Sarens selected a Terex-Demag SL3800 crane with a maximum load capacity of 650T in SSL configuration that was mobilised on site one week before the lift. A crane that is particularly notable for its agile handling in confined spaces, as on this occasion.
The works to install this new bridge, which will greatly reduce the distance to be travelled and the time taken by passengers between the station and the car park, were carried out in very short time slots, over a weekend, so as not to hinder the traffic of the trains running just below the new metal structure.
As a way of speeding up the work of raising the new bridge, Sarens decided to use a tackle fastening system, thus avoiding the use of the usual fastening lugs on the bridge itself. This significantly reduced the time required for the installation of the bridge, increasing, at the same time, the safety of the entire process.
According to Koen Rooms, Project Manager at Sarens, "to ensure the success of this operation, we carried out a test under real-life conditions the day before the final lift, which allowed us to accurately execute the final installation. The bridge was lifted at a radius of 27m and installed in five hours".
Sarens has over sixty years of experience in the lifting and installation of civil engineering structures around the world. In France, the company was involved in the installation of the Viaduc des Rocs in Poitiers, as well as the Velodrome Stadium in Marseille. The company also took part in the installation works of the Gateway Bridge Project in Perth (Australia) and the Kent Street Bridge in Ottawa (Canada), among others.
