The Genk Green Logistics facilities are located in the former Ford factory in Genk, which once employed more than 14,000 people.
Sarens has worked on the creation of the new quay area, which will provide an outlet for logistical maneuvers by water thanks to the Albert Canal, assembling and installing two barge cranes in the quay of these facilities.
The new port infrastructure at the Genk Green Logistics facility in Limburg will help to boost the industrialization of the area, and will provide a new outlet by barge for the logistics complex, which occupies an area of approximately 250,000 m2. Genk Green Logistics occupies the area vacated by Ford in 2014, which at the time employed more than 14,000 people in the region.
As part of this development, which began in June 2021, the logistics space has been provided with different exits to facilitate transport, both by road and rail. Sarens, world leader in heavy lifting, engineered transport and crane rental services, has been directly involved in the construction of the new port infrastructure in the Port of Limburg, which will serve to provide this complex with a new outlet, in this case by barge.
Commissioned by Künz for LDM due to its proven expertise, Sarens was responsible for the assembly of two barge cranes. For this purpose, the heavy lifting specialist brought some of its most advanced cranes to the site, including the Liebherr LTM1150, LTM1300, LTM1350, as well as a Demag AC700.
The work on site posed significant challenges, especially in terms of the space available for maneuvering under maximum safety conditions. Sarens therefore chose different models of mobile cranes, which took a whole day to transport and set up. In total, the Sarens team dedicated to these tasks in Genk consisted of 11 crane operators, 10 transport personnel and a dedicated supervisor, who ensured that all operations were carried out on time and within budget.
According to Luc De Meester, Project Manager at Sarens, “We were aware that space constraints were going to be one of the main limitations of this project. However, thanks to the advance preparation of Wietse Dockx, Project Engineer, and the execution of Michel Kreikaard, Lifting Supervisor, we were able to comfortably meet the deadlines set by our client.” De Meester adds that “this is not our first job together with Künz, and we look forward to continuing to work with them on important projects with economic and social projection such as Genk Green Logistics”.
Sarens has extensive experience in carrying out large projects in Belgium, such as assisting with the heavy lifting of tanks at the Citrosuco plant in Ghent. Sarens has also worked together with Cargill in the maintenance of its facilities, providing the necessary machinery to maximize biodiesel production, and has also been able to assist in the assembly of several of the stages for the last edition of Tomorrowland 2023, consolidating its role as an ideal partner for the economic and social development of the region.
