The latest expansion of the RDMP Balikpapan plant, property of Pertamina, Indonesia's state-owned oil company, will increase the plant's processing capacity by 100,000 barrels per day.
Sarens has participated in the construction of the plant by performing the lifting and installation of various heavy loads between 5 and 10 tons using the Demag A650 mobile crane.
The plant has a focus on sustainability, upgrading the processing quality to Euro5 standard in order to meet Pertamina's goal to be Net Zero Emissions by 2060.
The RDMP Balikpapan plant is the largest project of Pertamina, Indonesia's state-owned oil company. Upon completion of its expansion, the plant's processing capacity will increase to 100,000 barrels per day, thus producing 360,000 barrels every 24 hours, significantly helping to meet the country's growing demand for domestic fuel and petrochemicals. It will also contribute to the company's goal of Net Zero Emissions by 2060 with more environmentally friendly processing techniques that improve product quality from Euro2 to Euro5 standards.
Sarens, world leader in heavy lifting, engineered transport and crane rental, has been actively involved in the construction of this plant on behalf of the client PT. BUMI MARGA KHARISMA UTAMA, carrying out the lifting and installation of steel structures and pipes weighing between 5 and 10 tons. Prior to selecting the machinery to carry out the work, Sarens' engineering team conducted a thorough site assessment to understand the ground conditions and accessibility, as well as to comply with the strict safety regulations.
Once the study was completed, Sarens team determined that the best crane to perform the heavy lifting work was the Demag AC650 mobile crane, which has a maximum lifting capacity of 700 tons and several boom configurations, reaching heights above 90 meters, an essential requirement for the project, where installations at considerable heights were carried out. The crane was also selected for its ability to perform complex lifts quickly, which helped keep the project's tight schedule on time.
The crane was transported from the shipyard to the site at Balikpapan using a heavy-duty trailer, taking only one day to erect the crane, which was positioned based on the preliminary analysis. The engineering team paid special attention to ensure that all components were precisely aligned and assembled. It was also crucial to coordinate the entire machinery erection process with the ongoing activities on site to minimize disruptions and ensure safety.
Once all the equipment was in place, the process of lifting and installing the loads, which consisted of pieces of steel infrastructure and pipes with a radius of between 80 and 90 meters and a weight of between 5 and 10 tons, was undertaken.
The main difficulty of this operation was the high altitude of some of the installations, over 90 meters, but it was sorted out thanks to the length of the crane jib used. Due to the tight schedule, the work was spread over several hours, with limited light.
Imam Prakoso, Country Manager of Sarens indicated that "the project has been carried out in perfect compliance with the tight schedule and with the maximum safety measures thanks to the Sarens skilled engineering team. We are very pleased to be able to participate in such relevant projects for the country as the Balikpapan RDMP Plant, which boosts its energy production and also does so with an eye on sustainability, ensuring a cleaner future for all".
