A make-up air solution is recommended for buildings where environmental conditions warrant a greater need for ventilation not only to improve the quality of air within the building, but also protect the health of those inside.
Sarens has helped with the Make-Up Air (MUA) units installation for the Scarborough General Hospital through their friends at Amherst Crane, weighing 40,000 lbs each.
Scarborough Health Network has begun an expansion of infrastructure and equipment to match its medical and clinical talents and Sarens, world leader in heavy lifting, engineered transport and crane rental services, has helped with the Make-Up Air (MUA) units installation for the General Hospital, weighing 40,000 lbs each through their friends at Amherst Crane.
Scarborough General Hospital is a major teaching hospital in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the oldest and largest in Scarborough. The hospital opened its doors in 1956 as the first in the township and since then, healthcare has come a long way over the past 70 years, with innovation, research and cutting-edge technology helping to improve many aspects of the hospitals.
Located northwest of the intersection of McCowan Road and Lawrence Avenue East, this large hospital facility requires exhaust fans to replenish the air supply while maintaining a comfortable working temperature and the Make-up Air units are exactly designed to “make up” the air in the interior space that has been removed due to process exhaust fans. This type of HVAC solution pulls in fresh, tempered air from outside the building to replace existing air that cannot be recirculated.
A make-up air solution is recommended for buildings where environmental conditions warrant a greater need for ventilation not only to improve the quality of air within the building, but also protect the health of those inside. Special and custom, innovative air handling solutions were designed to provide the building with tempered fresh air, both heated and cooled.
The Amherst team along with the Sarens team had to organise planning permission and road closures on the adjacent property. The equipment to the site was made during one day from Cambridge. Nine trucks in total transported all the equipment to be installed during 8 hours of assembly. A 600 ton AT Crane must be installed to lift the MUA units to its place. The ICU had to be evacuated prior to hoisting as a safety precaution. Then, machinery and Sarens 9 crew members started the job.
Cass Frey-C&R Supervisor of Sarens explained about the operation: "We are very pleased to be able to continue to drive the Scarborough General Hospital so that more people can access the health network. The client relied on Sarens and despite some slight complications our team was able to complete the installation perfectly and smoothly.”
Sarens' operations team had to hurry up the night before the permit expired at 6 am next day to remove the crane and that was a big challenge, but because of the experience and expertise in the sector, the team was able to complete the uninstallation on time.
Sarens has been a key player in the Canadian construction industry for years, thanks to the wide experience of its team, its in-depth knowledge of the sector and its extensive portfolio of cranes and modular transports. Sarens has extensive experience in the Canadian construction industry and on similar projects internationally. Among others, Sarens has worked on Toronto's Finch West Station project, installing 30 precast ceiling panels of 3.25 tons each below ground level, and was also able to contribute to the renovation of Union Station, where the team carried out the lifting and subsequent installation of several 9.4-ton iron girders for the flying garden connecting the station's north and south towers.
