The new thermal power plant, located in Vietnam's Quang Binh province, will be of vital importance in supplying power to a country with a growing demand, especially in its industrial sector, when it comes on stream in 2025.
With a robust capacity of 1,200MW, this coal-fired facility, spearheaded by EVN and executed by the consortium of Mitsubishi Corporation (Japan), Hyundai Engineering and Construction (Korea), Construction Corporation No. 1 (Consortium MC - HDEC - CC1), underscores Vietnam's steadfast commitment to sustainable energy development.
The Quang Trach 1 project, located in Quang Dong commune of Quang Trach district, will generate up to 8.4 billion kWh per year when commissioned in 2025. The 48.6-hectare project is part of the Quang Trach power complex, which will also house the 1.2 GW Quang Trach 2 coal-fired power plant with two ultra-supercritical coal units of 600 MW each. Vietnam's state-owned Vietnam Electricity (EVN) is responsible for developing the project, with an estimated investment of £1.26 billion ($1.78 billion).
The Quang Trach 1 marine infrastructure will include a coal import port and a 1.27 km-long breakwater. The coal import port will consist of two berths with a capacity of 100,000 deadweight tons. An approach bridge will be built with reinforced concrete girders and pedestals 2 m high and 5.5 m wide.
