The new bridge in Wijnegem, in which construction is involved Sarens, will improve the road connection for pedestrians and cyclists, revitalizing not only the infrastructure and economy of the region, but also promoting sustainable transport.
On the job site, high-tech equipment was used, including the LTM1500-8.1 and AC500 cranes, which were selected for their exceptional capabilities and were mobilized as efficiently as possible by road travel.
Sarens used its cranes onsite for two times two days only marking a record time for the execution of a project of this scale.
The new Wijnegem bridge will contribute to improve the road connection for pedestrians and cyclists. The main purpose of the project was to replace an older structure, thus ensuring a safer and more efficient infrastructure.
This project is of great importance for Wijnegem, and the workshops at Kluizendok, Ghent where the bridge is assembled are located. The improved road connection not only facilitates the mobility of citizens, but also encourages the use of more sustainable modes of transport, thus contributing to a reduction in pollution and promoting a healthier lifestyle. In terms of social impact, the successful completion of this project has not only improved the road infrastructure, but also generated local employment and boosted the economy in the Antwerp region, reaffirming Sarens' position as a leader in the construction sector and contributing significantly to the progress and sustainable development of Belgium.
The choice of Sarens as project leader was no accident. The company proved to be the most suitable choice thanks to its track record of success, international experience and engineering capability. Sarens' excellence in managing projects of this scale was a determining factor, and its commitment to quality was perfectly aligned with the client's expectations. Importantly, a number of critical issues were undertaken during the planning phase, including the risk of kipping of bridge parts. However, Sarens' expertise in risk management and meticulous approach to planning ensured the successful execution of the project.
On site, high-tech equipment was used, including the LTM1500-8.1 and AC500 cranes, which were used to lift pieces up to 237 tons and 12-meter height . These mobile telescopic cranes were selected for their exceptional capabilities - especially useful for the unique needs of the project - and were mobilized as efficiently as possible by road travel. The transportation of the additional counterweights required to carry out the work was precisely coordinated, and their installation took minimal time to implement, demonstrating the operational efficiency of the Sarens team.
The project still had its challenges, and one of the most critical aspects will be the transport of the bridge itself, which has to be moved from Kluizendok to Wijnegem on pontoons by canal. However, the Sarens team demonstrated their technical skill and ability to overcome these challenges effectively, with the job site witnessing the presence of the cranes for just four days, setting a record time for the execution of a project of this scale.
Luc de Meester, Key Account Manager at Sarens Belgium, adds: "The construction of the new Wijnegem Bridge marks a significant chapter in the history of infrastructure development in the region. Our meticulous approach, international experience and commitment to excellence have proven their worth for projects of this scale. Beyond the physical construction of the bridge, the social and economic impact extends to creating local jobs, promoting sustainable modes of transport and boosting the regional economy".
