This new project, which will be managed by Malaysia Rapid Transit System Sdn Bhd (MRTS), covers a 4km track on which a modern light rail system will run and will be integrated with the public transport systems at both stations.
As this is an international link between Malaysia and Singapore, RTS Link will have Immigration, Customs and Quarantine facilities at both stations to enable all immigration formalities to be carried out at the station of departure without the need to repeat the process at departure, which will exponentially reduce the time required to do so.
Sarens is currently participating in the construction of this infrastructure, providing its experience, machinery and human resources for the lifting of 25 beams weighing between 26.8 and 181.6 tons.
The new Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) project linking the cities of Johor Bahru in Malaysia and Singapore will enable more than 10,000 passengers per hour to travel between the two destinations in just 6 minutes, reducing road traffic on the Johor embankment, which currently carries more than 350,000 vehicles each day. This will be a major step forward in avoiding congestion in the region, and at the same time, will have a significant environmental impact by reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the area.
Sarens, world leader in heavy lifting, engineered transport and crane rental, has been appointed to actively participate in the construction of the necessary infrastructure for this project on behalf of the construction company Trans-Elite, taking responsibility for the lifting of 25 beams weighing between 26.8 and 181.6 tonnes. Once in the required location, the lift proceeds by slewing as each beam is placed on bridge pillar sideways.
The Sarens engineering team brought a 750 ton capacity LR 1750 SDBW configuration crane unit with a 77m main boom to the site from Lukut in Port Dickson, Malaysia, to carry out the lifting of the beams. For the assembling of this crane they faced a major space constraint, as the available area was very close to railway tracks. In addition, they will have an important time constraint, as they will only have two months to complete all their tasks.
This new project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2025 for operation during 2026, will provide a commuter light rail network of approximately 4 km in length with two stations: one in Bukit Chegar, Johor Bahru in Malaysia, and one in Woodlands, Singapore. At each station, there will also be a shared facility for the Immigration, Customs and Quarantine authorities of both Singapore and Malaysia as it is an international link, so that users will be able to carry out the necessary immigration formalities to and from both countries at the departure station, without having to stop again at the arrival station.
In addition to time savings for passengers and environmental improvements for the surrounding area, the RTS Link project will create 1,500 new jobs in the area, as well as new job opportunities for train maintenance at the Wadi Hana Depot, where train storage and operational facilities will be built.
Sarens has extensive international experience in the development of railway projects. Among others, has participated in the transport of an 8,400 tons bridge over the A1 highway in the Netherlands; in the assembly of a tunnel boring machine for the construction of the tunnel through which the train will run in Lodz, Poland; or more recently, in the modernisation of the French railway network by lifting a bridge of more than 1,300 tons in the city of Massy.
