Through the creation of its new SP business unit in Batam, Sarens is securing a portfolio of recurring clients, taking on some of the most important projects executed in the major fabrication yards around the region.
This expansion coincides with a time when Indonesia's Ministry of Investment and Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) is currently encouraging foreign investment in the domestic construction industry.
The Sarens yard and offices located in Batam are spread over 1,300 sqm, where the company has a team of operators and machinery ready to be mobilized as soon as needed.
Sarens, world leader in heavy lifting, engineered transport and crane rental, consolidates its presence in Indonesia thanks to the creation of its new SP business unit in Batam. Since 2019, where they carried out their first local job, the Sarens team has been working in the region to secure a portfolio of recurring clients, taking on some of the most important projects executed in the large fabrication yards around Batam and the nearby islands, whether from national clients (Medco, Timas or Pertamina) or foreign ones (Aramco, NOC, GE or Qatar Gas).
It’s important to raise that, with its extensive network of islands, Indonesia faces unique challenges in connecting its people and resources. The construction industry, therefore, is reflected in its contribution to the development of essential infrastructure such as roads, bridges, airports and ports, as well as job creation and economic stimulus. This expansion of the sector is not only facilitating the movement of goods and people, but is also fostering regional development and trade by generating demand for various supporting industries, including manufacturing and services, further stimulating economic growth.
Within this context, and coinciding with the company's growth, Indonesia's Ministry of Investment and Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) is currently promoting foreign investment in the national construction industry. Given that there are currently a total of 69 priority national development projects, mainly focused on the development of industrial infrastructure and new renewable energy sources, it is worth noting the great importance of companies with extensive experience in this sector, such as Sarens, which are also located in the region in order to provide support without having to travel long distances.
The Sarens yard and offices located in Batam are spread over 1,300 m2, where the company has a team of operators and machinery ready to be mobilized as quickly as needed, and also serves as a maintenance centre for servicing. Currently, the Batam unit has a team that has been gradually growing and completely capable to undertake any project requirement, all of them Indonesian and some in supervisory positions, with occasional help from some members of the Sarens international team.
One of the team's busiest moments came last year, when the Batam team had to move an approximately 4,000-ton deck for McDermott - Aramco, just after having collaborated with McDermott - Qatargas to carry out the weighing and loading of 3,800 tons. The Formosa - Jan de Nul project also featured prominently in the activities of this new unit. During its development, a deck of more than 100m high and 1,600 tons had to be lifted using the CS1000 jacking system in order to move and secure the cargo on the vessel.
As Richard Andrianto, Sarens Project Engineer and Operation Manager in the Batam branch, says, "Indonesians value attitude and camaraderie very highly, which we believe is the main reason for our success. In fact, our team's skills have been recognized by other more experienced Sarens units and some of our team members are also currently being assigned to international projects in regions such as Africa, India and the Middle East”.
Sarens has extensive international experience in highly complex transport and construction operations, where it has been able to collaborate on a number of projects. These include the construction of several offshore jackets to increase QFAB's liquefied natural gas production and the expansion of the Al Shaheem offshore oil field in the Qatar region, as well as the modernization and upgrading of the PT Pertamina refinery in Balikpapan, Indonesia, bringing great value to this sector.
