This new facility represents the largest investment in the European petrochemical sector in recent years, will generate up to 380 new jobs, and will produce taxes of more than 160 million PLN.
Sarens has been directly involved in this project, being responsible for the logistic operations for the construction of the plant from Gdansk to the port of Plock, where it was also in charge of unloading operations.
Construction works on the new Olefins III petrochemical plant, located in Plock, is now well under way, with hundreds of its heaviest components having been transported. Most of these components have been shipped from various factories in different parts of the world to the port of Gdansk, where the most critical ones were transported by barge through the Vistula River to the Plock quay and then to the refinery by means of Self-Propelled Modular Trailers. Sarens, world leader in heavy lifting, engineered transport and crane rental solutions, was awarded together with its partner DSV to lead the logistical transport maneuvers from Gdansk to Plock.
Prior to the start of the operation, the Sarens technical team carried out a major study on the navigability of the Vistula River, one of the last wild rivers in Europe. The fact that in one section of the river the maximum water depth was unknown could be an obstacle to the transport of items weighing close to 1,000 tons, in addition to the presence of several bridges along the way, which also limited the maximum height of the load.
Sarens also confronted the need to carefully study the maximum allowable load on the Plock quay unloading operations, as it has never been used to unload such large loads -sometimes close to 1,000 tons-. Intense engineering was performed to propose the ideal cranes, cranes configurations and ground matting to avoid costly and timely quay improvement.
Once both phases of the study were completed, Sarens decided to move to the location a 1,250 tons crawler crane type Demag CC6800 plus an additional Demag CC3800-1 crane unit with a load capacity of 650 tons and 48 axle lines SPMTs (Self Propelled Modular Transports).
The last phase of the transport operation took place from Plock quay to the Olefins plant. Prior to this operation it was necessary to carry out a study on which route was the optimal one and which civil engineering operations would be necessary to ensure its success: reinforcement of bridges, modifications to traffic roundabouts, dismantling of road signs, etc. These operations for transporting loads of up to 900t were carried out at night in order to reduce the disturbance to the surroundings.
This plant, which construction depends on the joint venture formed by Hyundai and Técnicas Reunidas, represents the largest investment made in the European petrochemical sector in recent years, with an estimated value of 13.5 billion PLN -equivalent to more than 2.88 billion euros- and once in operation as of 2025, it will have a transcendental impact on Polish industry, since it will mean a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions for each ton of final product produced.
The production of the new Olefins III petrochemical plant will directly affect Polish industry, producing materials for parts for the automotive industry, components for electronics, hygiene and medical products, and synthetic fibers for the textile industry, among others. In total, it is estimated that the plant will generate approximately 380 direct jobs when it comes into operation and will generate taxes of more than 160 million PLN - 34.2 million euros - which will revert to the Polish economy.
Sarens has extensive international experience in the petrochemical processing sector. It has recently collaborated in the construction of Corpus Christi Polymers' new oil derivatives processing plant in Texas (SA), in the renovation of IRPC's DCC cyclone reactor in Thailand, or in the upgrades of PT Pertamina's refinery in Balikpapan (Indonesia), among others.
