This third batch will complete the development of the Al Shaheen field, located 80 km north of Ras Laffan coast in Qatar. It is one of the largest in the world with 300 wells on 33 platforms, from which approximately 45% of all Qatari oil is extracted.
The company responsible for the construction, PTSC M&C and their Partners PVC MS/DUC HUYNH, have called on Sarens to ensemble two jackets of 2,800 tons each, which has deployed two twin units of LR1750s cranes for twenty (20) lifts with the heaviest cargo appx 600t. The jackets and topsides of the wellhead platforms, after assembled, will be also loaded out by Sarens’ mega-transporting vehicle - SPMT with more than 200 axle lines, now being prepared to depart for the site.
Development works on the third batch of the Al Shaheem offshore oil field have entered a momentous phase, with the assembly of the two jackets on which the wellhead platforms will be placed. This third phase will enable the field to exceed the 300,000 barrels per day currently produced, which already accounts for approximately 45% of Qatar's total oil production.
This new expansion of the Al Shaheen field, called Gallaf Batch 3 Projects, will be operated by North Oil Company, a consortium formed by Qatar Petroleum and Total Energies, and will have two wellhead platforms with a total weight of 19,000 tons. Fabrication of the jackets, weighing approximately 2,800 tons each, on which the wellhead platforms topsides will be placed, is already underway at yards of PTSC M&C and PVC MS in the Vietnamese port of Vung Tau, from where they will be shipped to Al Shaheen field in Qatar.
To carry out the assembly of these infrastructures, PTSC M&C and their partners PVC MS/DUC HUYNH have called on the international experience of Sarens, world leader in heavy lifting, engineered transport and crane rental. For this work, Sarens has sent two twin LR1750s cranes to the area, which will be responsible for carrying out up to 20 lifting maneuvers for loads of over 600 tons.
Once each structure has been assembled, these cranes will be responsible for placing the jackets on a SPTM (Self-Propelled Transport Module) prepared specifically for this operation, with more than 200 axle lines. These devices will transport the structures to the loading area, from where they will be moved to the area where the new Al Shaheem wind farm will be installed.
The field began operations in 1994, approximately 80 km north of the Ras Laffan coast in Qatar. Prior to the start-up of this new third batch, it had more than 300 active wells and 33 platforms, operating at water depths of approximately 60 metres. At its current stage of development, the field is producing approximately 300,000 barrels of oil per day, making Al Shaheen the largest and most important oil field in Qatar and one of the most important and complex in the world, accounting for approximately 45% of the emirate's oil production.
Sarens has more than 60 years of international experience in the development and installation of strategically important projects. In the energy sector, Sarens has been recently involved in the Clean Fuel Project works in Thailand, in the expansion of the S-Oil plant in Ulsan, South Korea, in the construction of the Petroperu refinery in Talara (Peru), and in the Skikda refinery in Algeria among others. Sarens was recently commissioned by PTSC M&C for the load out of an LQUP jacket weighing more than 4,500 tons in Vietnam that will be dedicated to the extraction of oil&gas in the Bay of Bengal.
