Among other tasks, Sarens will provide six crawler cranes with a load capacity of up to 250 tons during the first phase of the construction work, in addition to the technical support of its engineering team.
Infineon will invest more than $2bil in the construction of this plant, which will start in July 2022 and be operational in 2024.
Sarens, world leader in heavy lifting, engineering transport and a reference in crane leasing services, will participate with its specialised machinery and engineering team in the construction of Infineon's new semiconductor manufacturing and office facility in Kulim, Malaysia.
The company will contribute to the first phase of construction of this plant, which is scheduled to start in July of this year, with their extensive experience in construction projects around the world, as well as with six crawler cranes with maximum load capacities of 250 tons (3 units), 150 tons (2 units) and 100 tons (1 unit).
Thanks to the great stability offered by this type of crane, in addition to their high load capacity, crawler models such as those supplied by Sarens for this project play a key role in the early stages of development in large building construction projects, or in cases where the work sites are particularly soft and unstable due to local weather. Their ability to lift heavy loads at great heights or over long distances is also particularly important.
Infineon's new plant in Kulim will be the second in that location and the third in the country and will involve an investment of approximately $2bil and the creation of more than 900 direct jobs for the German semiconductor manufacturer. It will produce microchips using materials such as silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN), which will be tested when produced at the plant in Malacca, in the south of the country, before being exported worldwide. Once commissioned in 2024, this factory is estimated to generate $2bil in additional revenues with products based on SiC and GaN.
Malaysia has gained global prominence in chip and semiconductor manufacturing in recent years, thanks to its highly skilled technical staff, the geopolitical stability of the region, and the need to diversify manufacturing tasks that until now have only been carried out in China or South Korea. It is estimated that by the end of 2021, Malaysia will be responsible for the production of 13% of the world's microchips and semiconductors, with more than 575,000 jobs dedicated to this industry, and with exports of more than $100bil.
This is not the first major construction project Sarens will be involved in in Malaysia in the coming months. During 2022, Sarens will also be involved in the construction of the MRT Line 3 in Kuala Lumpur, one of the country's most ambitious transport infrastructure projects, as it will connect the existing MRT, LRT, KTM and monorail lines.
Sarens is also a specialist in the development of construction projects worldwide, with more than 60 years of experience in projects of all sizes. Some of the most notable works in which this company has participated include, for example, the construction of the new international airport in Mexico City and the expansion of the Metro Line in Toronto (Canada), among others.
